On the day when it passed closest to the Earth for… well, aaages apparently. Does anyone actually keep track of these things, apart from statistics-mad US news programmes? I am convinced they have hundreds of people in bunkers somewhere, each with a bakelite telephone hotline to the newsroom, just poised to feed the latest sports, weather or special situations numbers upstairs.
